Gym Battles
Gym battles and rematch gyms. Defeating them increases your badge amount, unlocks rewards Halls of Fame, increases your energy and a few gyms can even award you a special Pokémon.
Regional Gyms and Rematch Gyms
Defeating all Regional Gyms except Generations League is the requirement for unlocking the rematch gyms and catching legendaries on maps. Beating Rematch Gyms unlocks rewards in the Central Hall of Fame and defeating all of them unlocks Elemental Gyms and the ability to encounter Xerneas and Yveltal on any map without any special ruling.

Elemental Gyms
In Elemental Gyms, only Pokémon that have the specific Type are allowed. Gyms up to Caitlin and the gyms of Gin.A and Curie use Pokémon of the typing as well while gyms after that force trainers to use Pokémon of a type with disadvantage except Diantha. After beating all Unova Gyms, trainers are able to use the Midas Lab. Also some rewards in the Central Hall of Fame will be unlocked. Defeating Gin.A awards a special Pokémon and an achievement(one-time only). He can be challenged a 2nd time for another special Pokémon. Nuclear Reactor is unlocked after beating the 2nd Gin.A Battle and becoming Lord of Pokémon
